As mentioned earlier in The Point’s “Expectations for BCS Sports Teams in 2014-2015,” the Blackhawk Christian Varsity Volleyball team had very high expectations for this season. So far, the Lady Braves’ performance has lined up with their lofty expectations, as these girls brought home BCS volleyball’s 4th consecutive and 11th total Sectional Championship trophy on Saturday, October 25. All the blood, sweat, and tears these ladies have shed throughout the season has definitely paid off. This particular sectional championship did not come easy – it took pure heart and desire from the Lady Braves to pull it off.
When the sectional draw was released, many Blackhawk players and fans were shocked at the matchup that Blackhawk drew. Blackhawk was randomly selected to play against Lakewood Park Christian in the first round. This season, Blackhawk and Lakewood are considered as the 2 best teams in Sectional 52 by far, so everybody knew that the winner of Thursday night’s first-round game between Blackhawk and Lakewood would end up winning the sectional. This led to an extremely intense atmosphere surrounding this game, which many expected Lakewood Park to win. This was a reasonable prediction, considering Lakewood swept Blackhawk 3-0 in the two teams’ only regular season meeting. However, Blackhawk has made tremendous strides since that game on October 2nd. The Blackhawk girls sought to take back what was rightfully theirs and were fired up to go get that W.
Blackhawk’s gym was jam-packed with fans from both sides. The game was intense right from the get-go and you could tell that this game would go down to the wire. Blackhawk won the first two games in dramatic fashion, with scores of 29-27 and 25-21, respectively. However, Lakewood would not go down without a fight and rallied back to win the next two games with scores of 25-23 and 25-17 to force a Game 5. At this point, it seemed like all the momentum had shifted to Lakewood’s side and that they would steal this colossal game from the Lady Braves.
Not if Marta Bleed had anything to say about it. The Senior and future Grace College Lady Lancer was absolutely fantastic Thursday night, and you could definitely tell that she was playing with an urgency because of the fact that it could have been her last high school volleyball game. Marta led the Braves to a dominant 15-9 victory in Game five to add to an incredible night for her, and BCS finally won the thrilling duel.
On Saturday, the Lady Braves had a couple of much easier games, as they swept Elkhart Christian in the morning and then again swept Bethany Christian at night to bring the Sectional Championship once again back to Blackhawk.
BCS also hosts Regionals, and our Lady Braves are pitted against a solid Triton squad on Tuesday night, October 28. If BCS wins, they will play the winner of Washington Township and Pioneer. On paper, the favorite for this Regional is Pioneer, with Blackhawk just behind them. Considering the momentum that Blackhawk is riding right now, watch out for Blackhawk to continue to make a deep postseason push.
